A Helpful App

A friend told me about this app: Think Dirty App (Dirty means TOXINS, y’all.) And it is SO EYE OPENING. Warning: Do not start scanning products in your home unless you are ready to make some big changes. You can use this app to scan bar codes of items such as shampoo, make up, dish soap, tooth paste, detergent and more. It will then give you a rating. A lot of things in my home were 9s and 10s. That is the worst rating there is! I’m slowly working to replace all the items that were that high.

One Household Cleaner

Resources I Use with My Oils

Carrier Oil – I love using ROLLER BOTTLES on my oils because I can add my own blends and also add a carrier oil to DILUTE the oil and make it last longer! It also goes on much easier with the roller top. This fractionated coconut oil is what I’ve been using as my carrier oil for the last year.

Roller Bottles – The BEST roller bottle tops are the stainless ones from Young Living that fit directly onto a YL bottle. The roller ball is stainless and it so much smoother than the plastic or anything else I’ve found. You can get a package of 10 for 9.95 I believe. (You get at least one in your starter kit!) I have ordered these pretty roller bottles as gifts for Christmas! They are very pretty.

Diffusers – I have multiple Young Living diffusers in my home and love them. I also have a few from Amazon that have worked really well too! I have this one, which has lasted more than a year so far. We had this one and loved it as well!  And  yet one more we’ve had for over a year and it’s still going strong! (WHY YES, I love diffusers and have them in every bedroom and our living areas!! I believe in the power of aromatherapy that much!)

January Favorite Things

What I am loving in the New Year…

It’s barely 2 weeks into the new year and the goals have been  stated, the new routines are forming, and here are a few things I’m loving…


Smoothies are by far the easiest way for me to get in several servings of FRUITS and VEGGIES. I can always tell I have more energy when I’m having a daily smoothie! I have had this blender for years now and *love it.*

Here’s what I toss into the blender for my smoothies, and without measuring, which would feed a few of us:

  • 1 banana
  • 1 avocado
  • 2 big handfuls spinach
  • small handful frozen strawberries
  • small handful frozen blueberries or any frozen fruit
  • greek yogurt
  • orange juice (half my household likes MILK in their smoothies, I prefer the citrus taste)


I am drinking a GALLON of water everyday! I’m feeling GOOD!

My Journaling Bible

I have a renewed love for my Bible at the beginning of this year. I think it must be reading the book Women of the Word and realizing just what a treasure we have in those pages! And the journaling Bible just provides so much room in the margins for note taking and prayers and such…

Bullet Journal

Super uber simple, I followed Edie’s methods in her free video found here.  So. I was NOT going to jump on the bullet journal band wagon. I wasn’t going to do it! Til I was at a goal setting workshop with the amazing Dr. Edie of LifeinGrace blog and she pretty much convinced me. {grin} She has a free video you can sign up to receive in your email and it goes over exactly how she does it. Her ideas are so simple that we can all benefit from it!

Essential oils

I also have a growing and somewhat renewed love for my oils. I have been using Young Living oils for a little over a year now. I can tell such a difference in these oils and the ones I used to use. My mood and overall emotional well being is more STABLE, I’m using their fruit juice supplement and have more ENERGY, our house is generally very WELL. I taught my first class on DITCHING THE TOXINS via video on facebook. I am just loving it all!

Exercising regularly

Ouch. Yep. It’s the beginning of a new year, of course I am exercising. LOL! But I feel so.much.better. I told my husband that weight lifting and walking/jogging 3-4 times a week leaves me feeling empowered. Like I really CAN do hard things. Maybe I’m not a wimp after all. And, handling stress is something I actually can do when I’m exercising. My body needs it.

The Essential Oils I Use Every Single Day

These little bottles of oils are amazing. They have improved my life and my mood so much that I have to share! Have you ever wondered what all the hype was about? What in the world do people even do with these oils? Well, I’m here to tell you how I personally use them each and everyday!

**In this video I discuss a household cleaner and some other items for detoxifying your home. I will be sharing those in a blog post coming next week! A Part 2 for this post! 

Oils in the Morning

  • Frankincense – there are so many amazing benefits to using frankincense on a regular basis. I mean, they brought it to the baby Jesus, right?? It is so good for your skin so I mix it in with my face lotion everyday. It is also good for helping to maintain low stress levels.
  • Dragon Time – this is the 2nd type of female/hormone oil that I use. I have been using progessence (explained in my night time oils) for 1 year and 2 months now. It has changed my female life. I had terrible cycles all through my life. The progessence helped with every single physical symptom. No more cramps, cycle cut in half, amazing. Well, the Dragon Time has been recently added to my routine to try to help with the extreme moods that come right before my cycle. I’ve been using it 3 months and it does seem to be helping! I rub 2 drops onto my stomach every morning and then 1 drop on the back of my neck.
  • Joy – joy is my happy smell. I rub it on my chest and neck every morning and am reminded to CHOOSE JOY and GRATITUDE.
  • Helichrysm – I’ve only been using this oil for about week! I got it FREE with my monthly order from Young Living! It’s an expensive oil so I wouldn’t typically have bought it, but it’s supposed to be good for scars as well as things like ringing ears, etc. I’m using it on a spot on my face that I’m hoping will disappear. 🙂 I will keep y’all posted!


Oils Throughout the Day

  • Thieves – this is our immunity blend and also happens to smell wonderful. We use it even when we aren’t sick because I like to be proactive with my oils and not just reactive! We are rarely sick in our home so I figure it must be helping!
  • Orange in my Diffuser – orange makes me happy. So I use orange nearly everyday, usually in combination with one other thing. I do orange & lavender, orange & peppermint, orange and ANYTHING is amazing. 🙂 I have my diffuser running all day in our main living area.
  • Grapefruit – I love grapefruit in my water! Anything citrus is usually my favorite.
  • Allergy blend – LLP is the allergy bomb. Actually we use it for ANY congestion and sniffles, ear pain, etc.
  • Focus Blend for my son – I mix Vetiver and Cedarwood to help my son focus well during our homeschool day!

Oils Before Bed

  • Progessence – The progessence is what I mentioned above that has helped my cycles so much. Pretty much the miracle oil. 😉 I put 2 drops on the inside of each ankle at night before bed.
  • Cedarwood – this is an oil that can be used for several things, but I use it to help me sleep at night! I have it in a roller bottle mixed with Lavender and I roll it on the bottoms of my feet.
  • Lavender – the calming, swiss army knife of oils! If you don’t know what oil to use in a certain instance, use lavender. I use it at night to help me get good rest.
  • Stress Away – I put this in my diffuser at night because my husband doesn’t care for the smell of Cedarwood in the diffuser. 🙂 Stress away has a vanilla-y type smell.

  • This is the carrier oil that I use to fill all my roller recipes
  • My favorite roller bottles are the metal rollers from Young Living, however. They are so much sturdier and the oils go on so smoothly! You can purchase a pack of 10 tops for $9.75 when you are a wholesale member. These fit on the actual Young Living bottles so you can make your own blends or put a roller ball on top of an existing favorite to roll right on!
  • Roller bottles from amazon are also very affordable, I have used this particular kind for a few years now as well. My first preference is the metal balls from YL, but I have used these with success as well!

10 Goals I’m Working Toward in 2017


I’m a terrible goal setter. I will just say that right off the bat. But, I don’t feel like that excludes me from TRYING AGAIN. PRESSING ON. Each of us is a work in progress, yes? So if I believe that, I must wake up and try again!

I’ve been using Power Sheets by Lara Casey to help me be more intentional and GRACE FILLED when it comes to setting goals for myself. Her blog posts and resources on this topic are so full of GRACE and also so good for us moms who have a million things on our plates! (See her current goal setting series, her book Make Things Happen and her resource Power Sheets for creating goals.) 


10 Goals I’m Setting in the New Year

  1. More consistent Scripture memory (I’m starting with Colossians 3, read this post for more info)
  2. Cooking more meals, eating dinner more as a family (this will help with my goal of eating healthier AND eating out less!)
  3. Think & pray before committing to ANYTHING new
  4. Regular exercise (I’m already signed up for Crystal Paine’s 15 Days to a Healthier You online course that costs $15 and has daily facebook live videos! Join me!)
  5. Smoothie or salad daily!
  6. 1-on-1 time with each child each month
  7. Implement weekly newsletter for my email subscribers
  8. Pray more. Worry less.
  9. Learn to behold God in all things. (See my word of the year for more on BEHOLDING my God!)
  10. Phone-free homeschool mornings (goal is from 9am-Noon)
  11. Bonus goal! (LOL) Share about essential oils and how beneficial they are by having more classes or get togethers with those who want to live healthier lives in 2017.

A few days ago I had a few hours to myself and was able to sneak away to a coffee shop and just pray and dream. I used to do this more often and I miss it so much! (That should be another goal for the new year!)



So what are your favorite ways to remain accountable when you set goals? Follow through is the hardest part! I would love to hear your ideas! I’m wondering/hoping if I could blog monthly about these goals if that would help ME to keep at it!

Homemade Body or Face Wash That’s Good For Your Skin

Homemade Body Wash

I have been slowly trying to remove toxins from our home. There are many unsafe things in so many of our products these days, so as I am able I have been replacing some of them.

More Healthy Options I’m Trying

Items Needed for Homemade Body Wash

1. Find an empty foaming soap bottle (I prefer foaming, but you don’t have to make if foaming!) I wanted a glass container, so here is the one I used.

2. Dr. Bronner’s Castille Soap – we use this for so many things! Love it! This link is for lavender, but there are other options as well!

3. Water

4. Essential Oils – only if you want to add more of a scent to your body wash! 


Ok this is SO SIMPLE that I feel silly typing this out – but here goes! 🙂

For body wash, I like to use 2 parts water and 1 part Dr. Bronner’s. For hand soap I think you can go even less, but I like it to be a little more soapy for body wash. You may play around with it and see what ratio you prefer!

Each soap dispenser is going to be a different size, but an example would be to mix 12 ounces of water and 6 ounces of castle soap.

Just mix into your soap dispenser, add 3-4 drops of essential oils and YOU’RE DONE!

Thieves Cleaning Wipes

Thieves Cleaning Wipes

When my babies were little, I made my own baby wipes! What?! Huh? Yes, yes I did. I used to be that mom. {ahem}

Now, for several reasons I will share below, I’m trying my hand at some homemade wipes again. This time, they are for cleaning.

I will start off by admitting to you that I love clorox wipes. I mean, I really really love them. I pretty much clean my entire house with them. Yes I do.

I know, I know…there are harsh chemicals in them.

But, I can clean a nasty toilet and then just THROW THE WIPE IN THE TRASH. There is just something wrong about cleaning a toilet and then throwing that cleaning rag into the dirty laundry or even into the washing machine. I know people do it everyday and live to tell about it. But, not me. No thanks. Gross. I’m just weird and grossed out by toilets.

Enter my new obsession love for essential oils. Thieves, especially.

Homemade Thieves Cleaning Wipes

Enter the need for a homemade cleaning wipe! In trying to rid my home of the bad chemicals that aren’t good for us, I’ve been replacing things like lotions, shampoos, household cleaners, and more.

It was time.

It’s so simple. It’s even easier than the homemade baby wipes I used to make!

All you need are paper towels, Thieves all-purpose cleaner, water and a  container to put them in!


  • Paper towel roll (cut it in half with a large kitchen knife, then pull out the cardboard center.)
  • 1 capful Thieves Household cleaner
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 round container (I cannot find the exact one I have on Amazon, but it is rubbermaid and the EXACT size for half of a paper towel roll. Maybe  around 7 inches in diameter.)


  1. Cut your paper roll in half. I used a large serrated kitchen knife. Saw through it. It will be a bit crumbly.
  2. Place one half the paper towel roll into the round container.
  3. Pour 1 capful of Thieves Household cleaner into 2 cups of water to mix together.
  4. Pour liquid mixture over the paper towels, making sure to get all of the top wet.
  5. Let the liquid soak into the paper towels. Place lid on when not in use.

That’s it! Can you believe how easy that is?

31 Everyday Ways to use Essential Oils

I’ve been using essential oils for several years now! Sometimes I know people wonder WHAT IN THE WORLD do you do with those things? How do you use them?

  1. Using my diffusers — making my main living space SMELL WONDERFUL (without harsh/toxic chemicals)
  2. Almost ALL my oils I put in roller bottles diluted with a carrier oil – I feel like this makes the oils last longer AND it is safe to use this way for my children as well! I use almond oil and fractionated coconut oil for my carrier oil.
  3. Diffusers in bedrooms – especially when a child is sick, placing a diffuser beside their bed to help them breathe in the oils and help them even as they sleep!
  4. Thieves (diluted & in roller bottles) on feet daily to help build our immune system
  5. A few drops (I use lavender & citrus) on dryer balls to cut down on time in the dryer for your clothes
  6. Pan Away – I’ve rubbed pan away in some lotion or coconut oil onto my aching back
  7. Digize – rubbing digize in some lotion onto my son’s stomach almost immediately helped stomach pains to go away
  8. Frankincense – I use 1 drop in my moisturizer each evening before bed
  9. Progessence – I’m using several drops of this daily to help with bad periods/female issues (I’ve had great results, but I’m going to wait for a few more cycles to give a full report!) And Yes! There’s an oil for that! ha!
  10. RC – this was the first oil that got me hooked! My son gets an annual cough, a friend brought RC over in a roller bottle diluted. I rubbed it on his chest and feet multiple times throughout the day and night and his cough didn’t last the 1-2 months it usually does! He was better within a week.
  11. Allergy blend – the blend of lavender, peppermint & lemon has helped us anytime we have runny noses, stuffy noses, etc.
  12. Thieves Household Cleaner – I’m slowly replacing all my household cleaners with these! (I also made homemade cleaning wipes with it! Post coming soon!)
  13. Any citrus or JOY blend – when I need a boost of energy or motivation, I often smell my favorite oils and rub them on my wrists. Citrus just makes me happy.
  14. Face wash – I use a mixture of castille soap and a few oils to wash my face! Lavender, tea tree, etc.
  15. Baths – take a warm bath with some epsom salts and a drop or two of lavender oil to help you relax before bed!
  16. Thieves tea – When I feel a cold coming on (or already have a sore throat or cold!) I put 1 drop of Thieves into a spoonful of honey (it mixes better with honey rather than water) and stir that into my hot tea of any kind!
  17. Minor burns – you can help the ease the pain of a minor burn by using a roller bottle with carrier oil + lavender in it!
  18. Purification in my diffuser – when there was a lot of sickness going around in our area, I put purification in my diffuser on the days I teach piano lessons! Lots of germs coming in and out and I was hoping to keep the spreading of sickness germs to a minimum!
  19. Massages – I am not a huge massage person, but I have friends that love to use lotion and put a drop or two of their favorite scent and then rub a back for a massage.
  20. Quick pick-me- up – just SMELL the bottle of peppermint for a quick pick me up in the middle of a long day. BE CAREFUL with peppermint – don’t get it on your fingers and then rub your face, eyes. But just smelling the oils has amazing benefits!
  21. Help to reduce scars with frankincense.
  22. Indigestion or tummy aches – use 1 drop of peppermint in a carrier oil or lotion to rub on tummies. Make SURE you don’t rub peppermint directly on skin – it is a “hot oil.” Dilute in a roller bottle or use rub in with lotion.
  23. Sore muscles after exercising or running – rub Pan Away on your achy muscles with lotion or carrier oil
  24. Headaches – my daughter has preferred Pan Away on her temples (in roller bottle with carrier oil) for headaches. I have friends who use peppermint for headaches.
  25. Odor neutralizer – burn dinner? Pets in the home? Diffusing purification is GREAT for helping to rid your home of bad smells.
  26. Put a few drops (any oil!) on a cotton ball, place in the air vents of your vehicle — WOW!! I hate to admit that we often eat in our van and then leave food trash/bags/wrappers in the van. Ahem. So sometimes you get in the van the next day and can still smell yesterday’s dinner or snack. YUCK. In addition to cleaning out the trash in the van, place a cotton ball with just 2-3 drops of oils on them in the air vents and your van will be smelling AMAZING within minutes!
  27. Growing pains – my son has been experiencing pain in his legs somewhat regularly over the past year. I get a little lotion and put a drop of Pan Away in it, rub on his legs for relief.
  28. Girly hormonal moods – I’m using the Dragon blend on myself and my tween/teen girls. Enough said. LOL!
  29. Fight infections – whenever we have sickness in our house, I use diluted oregano in a roller bottle on our feet, necks, chest. It SMELLS. Warning. But it works. Do some research on how oregano has been used before antibiotics came into use!
  30. Use lemon oil to replace lemon juice in your recipes!
  31. Hand sanitizer – for a healthier hand sanitizer, use coconut oil or your favorite lotion, put 1 drop of thieves in the lotion, rub over your hands!
  32. Citrus or peppermint when you first wake up in the morning — helps you WAKE UP! All you have to do is SMELL it!

As I’ve been researching essential oils lately, one thing I keep coming across is how just using ANY and ALL essential oils (of high quality) will increase your emotional well being. Better moods. I don’t know about you, but that is something I’m ALWAYS interested in improving in my own life, as one who has struggled with depression in the past, as well as having a household of moody tween/teen hormones raging! LOL!!

Coconut Oil Lotion {+ Printable Recipe Card}

Homemade Lotion with Coconut Oil and Essential Oils

A few years ago I shared a SIMPLE {4 ingredient, 5 minutes to make!} lotion recipe with you here on my blog and now I want to update this same recipe with new tips and ideas for you! I also have a free recipe card for you to print and use as a reference!


  • 1 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1/4 cup emulsifying wax (this bag will make quite a few batches)
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil
  • 12-15 drops your favorite essential oils (I used 7 drops lavender, 7 drops tangerine and LOVE the scent! I do not like the scent to be very strong, so this was still a very light scent)
  • 1/8 teaspoon of potassium sorbate (if you wish to add a preservative)

More Items Needed


1. In a 2-cup pyrex measuring glass, I melted the emulsifying wax WITH the coconut oil. (I have seen this recipe using olive oil as well, if you’d like to try that!) The coconut will be a little more white like the 2nd picture as opposed to the 3rd picture – the coconut oil lotion ends up being perfectly white, the olive oil is more of an off-white/creamy color. I put mine in the microwave for about 1 minute and then stirred. (The coconut oil will take a little bit longer to melt, just fyi.)

2. Fill a coffee mug or about 1 and 1/4 cup of water, heat in microwave, again, I heated for about 1 minute. (If you wish to add preservative – listed above under ingredients – you would add 1/8 a teaspoon to your water at this point!)

3. While water is heating, add your drops of essential oil. I only added about 14-15 drops, the original recipe calls for more than that. It really depends on how smelly you like your lotion! you don’t have to add a scent at all!!

4. Pour the hot water into the oil mixture and stir.

5. I then poured my lotion into the small 4oz jars. I left them open because you want to keep stirring the lotion so that it doesn’t separate. I basically left it on the counter and everytime I walked through the kitchen, I stirred it a few times.

After a few hours you have wonderful, homemade lavendar lotion!!

10 Simple Steps to a Better Me

Does even the title of this post bring mixed feelings and a twinge of guilt? Yep, me too. But, I am learning and God is ever so patient with me. He has to remind me that it is not wrong to want to be and feel my best for my family and for Him. It is not wrong to take a few moments to recharge, regroup, refocus. These things help me to be a better me.

Over the last few months of 2015, I have begun some simple steps that I think *anyone* can pick up and start today. Choose ONE item on this list and begin today. Sometimes, just one simple step can lead to the motivation to take that next step!

I am starting to notice that when I take care of the body and soul God gave me, I am more able to cheerfully care for the responsibilities in front of me.

Some of these things I’ve been doing for a long time, some I have only begun. But maybe you will find some encouragement to try one new thing in the new year!

10 Simple Steps to a Better Me

Lemon water — so simple, yet I think lemon water gives me a boost of energy in the morning! I drink lemon in my water all day, but some say to especially drink it in the morning! Have you read about all the benefits of lemon? Digestion, vitamin C, better focus.

1 Plank Daily – I will admit here that my first planks were about 10 seconds and at that point I thought I would die. Not kidding. But I’m up to about a minute and I can tell a difference in my inner/core strength and in my arms! Have you read all the benefits of doing planks?

Stretching – I have lower back pain, which is why I started doing this, but I just feel so good after stretching that I keep it up. So many benefits to stretching our aching/tense bodies!

Washing my face at night – Yikes. I’m afraid to admit this one. I’m now 39 years old and was never in the habit of doing this! But after a few weeks I can already tell a difference in my skin! I also use Organic Virgin Coconut Oil on my skin after I wash my face as a moisturizer, with 1 drop of frankincense. Have you read the benefits of coconut oil and/or of frankincense? Amazing how God has given us these things right from nature to help keep us healthy!

Oil pulling – I know, I know. It’s gross. Believe me, I am a texture person with a BIG gag reflex! But it only took me a few days to get used to this! And my teeth just feel so much cleaner, so I keep it up! I use the same Organic Virgin Coconut Oil for oil pulling as well. Fresh Air and walking/jogging – I’ve been jogging (with walking intervals) about 3 times a week for several months now. But even on the days I don’t get to exercise, I make sure I get outside. Even if it’s just to take the dog out and throw the frisbee with him for 3 minutes. The fresh air does our bodies so much good!! Especially through the winter months! And of course I don’t have to convince anyone of the benefits of exercise. BUT, I will say that as one who struggles with depression and anxiety, my stress levels go WAY DOWN when I am exercising consistently.

Essential Oils in a Diffuser and Roller bottles – I have used so many different brands of essential oils over the years. In my Diffuser , I especially love citrus for a happy-wake-me-up smell to fill my home. But, if recently I have been doing some research myself and began to learn the benefits of different quality oils if you are using for medicinal use. Young Living oils is one of the few (if only) companies I have found that can actually show you the field where the plants are grown, with no pesticides, they can show you each and every step of the process. Vitamins – I’ve gone back and forth and back and forth over the years about vitamins. Do they really help? When I read this article about how we are starving our boys’ brains, I immediately started giving Caleb good quality Vitamins along with quality Fish Oil. (Caleb is also an extremely picky eater, so I feel like his body really does need these nutrients!) So, since I was giving it to him, I decided all of us would start them. It’s on my morning to-do list and I think the combination of all these things is really helping me to feel my best.

Drinking Green Tea – especially the concentrated & organic kind with lots of nutrients! I have a friend who brought me a sample of the Matcha Green Tea, it’s pretty concentrated, so you have to use a whisk to get it all mixed in the water. I don’t use sugar anymore in my hot drinks, I use organic Agave Nectar that comes in my monthly Amazon Subscribe & Save shipment. I just put a small spoonful in my cup with this tea. I’m not ready to make huge claims, but I can tell you that it gives you energy and honestly has helped me not feel hungry all the time! Read what The Wellness Mama has to say about Matcha Green Tea.

Write the Word – I saved the best for last. Please don’t neglect God’s Word. I began writing out the Word of God and I love how this just gives me one more way to connect and get these truths deep into my heart, mind and soul. Write the Word. Pray the Word. Memorize the Word. Meditate on the Word. God’s Word is ESSENTIAL to living a healthy and content life! My favorite journal. If you’d like a schedule to write out the book of Ephesians, I have that here!

{BONUS #11} Praying the Scriptures – I mostly listed things above that I have begun over the last few months. But, I can’t leave this post without mentioning PRAYING the SCRIPTURES. So, just to quickly sum up. This list is not meant to induce guilt. This list is meant to help you live guilt-free as a happy and content mama. Our bodies are the temple of the Lord! He did not mean for us to live run down, miserable lives with no energy to accomplish the things He puts before us. There are SO many things in nature that God has given us to help us feel our best.
